Think Beyond The Horizon

Hi Friends!!!
I did my B. Tech computer science in a city near Tanjore. Yeah, people call my college a city only, because of its incredible strength in all departments.
Its none other than SASTRA UNIVERSITY (Shanmuga Arts Science Technology Research Academy). In this article I would like to pen down a few stuff regarding some gaps that I found in my college days. I would like to point out a few dark spots that have to change, only because of the reason that I would like to have the name that I was a pass out from a world class university.
OK, before I come to the point, I would like to ask our Alumni a few questions....

Are you really proud to be a SASTRA alumnus?
Did you get a quality education with right amount of pressures that made you fit to face the corporate world?
Did the corporate world recognize you for the reason that you are a special guy which is because you are a SASTRA pass out? (As the IITians get from the whole world).
Did the faculties really take part in motivating you to gain a good exposure such that they can be given the pride to share your success?
Do you think our college can be prepared by us and the management to compare with IIT standards? (Even I don't like comparisons, but to achieve certain standards we have to do it ).
And finally, are you really associated with our University after our Convocation day?

I am sure that the answer would be 99% "NO" for the last question but it would be 100% "YES" for the last but one question. I would say I am extremely happy that I got my education done in
SASTRA UNIVERITY and that my university had provided me placement opportunity to work in one of the world's reputed firm through which I am able to earn my livelihood. But I am not proud that I did my graduation in this university unlike the IITians or BITSians do because of the reason of , the privileges and the recognition they get in their work environment and the priority they get for higher studies.

So why shouldn’t our college be prepared to get that global standard?
And when will the IITians look at the SASTRITES and say "These guys are exceptional and I missed this college by border and joined IIT". Will this be only a dream or is it achievable? Is it on the hands of the management or on the hands of the students?
I think a little support from the management to the students and a little support from the Alumni to the management can make this achievable.
Yes, it’s not too far or no rocket science is required for this leap. A little planning and a little organisation of few things will help us to first follow their standards and then its in our hands to bring them up.
Ok, now let me ask my junior guys, the Alma matter of SASTRA a few questions...
Do you think you are equipped enough to handle the pressures in the corporate world? (Or still thinking that the company will prepare me for handling pressures and knowing all technology)
Are you just studying to score good marks and get into the companies like TCS, WIPRO, INFOSYS or wanted to get into MICROSOFT, IBM, YAHOO, GOOGLE or equip yourself to become Entrepreneurs?
Do you think after getting placed in a company, the duty of you as well as the college is over? ( I mean the company's call at the right time and not after a year of graduation that is happening in most of the cases. The excuse cannot be recession because even before the recession my seniors faced the same problem. I would say its only because of the priority that the company gives to our college. Though its bitter to hear its the fact)
How many of you guys have contacts with at least one Alumnus who was a pass out 10 years back? OK, 5 years back at least?
Hey guys do you think is it really necessary to have contact with the Alumni and because of it there will be a change in you as well as the college standard?

I also crossed your stage guys and I knew it’s easy to question than to answer. And these are not
Technical questions, these are a few questions not just to answer within you but to take steps in order to build global standards
(Don’t think my article is full of questions. These are easily answerable in one word and if we decide to convert those questions whose answers are “NO” to “YES” then, yeah... I would say we are on the right path to achieve what we want).

I would like to share a few instances that happened to me with the higher management, the alumni and my juniors to show the mindset of the higher management about alumni and how the faculties misuse their power as examiners for the lab exams.

“I was on my second year and that was my third semester lab exam on computer Organization. The HOD was my external examiner. I finished my lab exercise and got my output verified pretty soon and was waiting for my viva. The microprocessor lab exam was happening to the opposite side in the same lab. We heard a guy's mobile ringing who was attending the microprocessor exam. His examiner told to place the mobile on the table. Before him doing so it rang again. Everybody in the lab laughed (though nothing so humorous in that). After him keeping the mobile on the table it rang again but I thought it was their examiner's mobile ringing and started smiling. Whose ever it may be, I accept it was not the right place to smile or laugh at some one when the examination is going on where everybody is expected to maintain the decorum. So I had been asked by my external examiner the reason for the smile. I replied, I thought it was the mam's mobile ringing which became a sense of humor for me after all the chaos happened before getting the mobile in the microprocessor lab. My external examiner who was a good friend of the other who was handling the microprocessor lab told her the same. The microprocessor lab examiner asked my HOD,” Why don't you send the boy out and ask him to write the exam again?” Thank God, my HOD was not that bad and told her that this guy has finished his exam and think he won’t repeat this again. After coming out of the exam, my HOD advised me not to behave like this and have to be aware of what's happening around you and then behave to the situation which I consider as a very valuable one”.
After a year, at my third year (6th semester), for my advanced microprocessor lab, the same mam who was the examiner for the microprocessor lab at that time was my examiner then. Unfortunately I was not able to bring the output. My internal marks were decent and I require only 6 marks to clear the paper. I was called for viva. The mam remembered what happened in my 2nd year and told the external examiner “This is the guy who laughed at me last year during the exam. See how bold he is. These type of guys have to be failed and then only they will learn how to behave with the faculty.” I was asked a viva question for which I was not able to answer. For that the mam told these guys think they don't want to study after their placements. They have become proud that they going to earn more than us.” and asked me “What are you going to do in your company? If you are like this you will be chucked out of your company. Don't spoil our college name by joining the company without knowing anything like this.” and more till the end of my viva.
After these humiliations I was totally dissuaded and lost my morale. I wondered how teachers were like that instead of being happy for our placements they were the other way round. The faculty was an authoritative person, an experienced faculty who knew the subject pretty well but rarely teaches and very good in demoralizing and taking revenge on students. But if you know her personally then you will be the kings or queens in her subject.
The second instance though was not a great one, but only the words that came out hurt me. It was from our Dean of planning and development. Myself and one of my friends in our final year wanted to start the alumni meet at least at a smaller scale with KurukSastra 08.So we were doing some ground work like sending mails and getting replies from our Alumni whether they will be comfortable on that date decided. We were being called by our dean who came to know that we have started doing something on Alumni meet. We went to meet him. We were appreciated by our dean, but he said,” The Alumni meet should not be conducted for time pass. It must be really professional and must have to bring some impact financially which can never be expected because I know our Alumni are hopeless and not even one turned back when we sent the emails for the financial help for building the auditorium.”
I thought he might have said in frustration but I thought he was a bit right, because I too don't know any alumnus who had given any financial help or guided the students to get some industry exposure by arranging any trainings or helping them in getting some final year projects.
After my analysis, I just found that the college don't bother what happens to the students and don't have any clue whether the students have got their call from their companies at right time or how many students are going for higher education or how many are becoming Entrepreneurs. The same is in the side of students also who dont look back the college which has given us a decent position in the society.
Let's don't want to think beyond horizons. Let's at least start thinking “Beyond engineering” and “Beyond Convocation”. I would like to say behalf of the Alumni that everybody will be able to do something for the college financially or technically. And I request the university to take steps to improve the standard of the students by creating them opportunities to bond with the Alumni that would at least help them to get some training, projects in the industry, workshops and more stuff to improve the mindset and skills of the Alma matter.
If my article is able to change the mindset of at least one alumni and one junior of my university then I am sure the time has come for me to start getting proud to be a SASTRITE or the words of our dean would become true and we would remain hopeless Alumni forever.
So come out of the dark and enlighten the place which gave us future. Be the trend setters and great guides for our juniors who are waiting for the bright future. And don't wait for the management to come forward to. Let’s go forward and I am sure all student initiatives will end in success like our KurukSastra and Daksh. I also appreciate the management for the alumni meet organized in Philadelphia and in Chicago and I request the management to organize one in Bangalore and/or in Chennai for us to get along helping you to fulfill our dreams.
All the juniors and Alumni please feel free to contact me regarding anything that you require. I would be always ready for any discussions. You can mail me to

  3. Great job dude...
You have taken the initiative. Lets all hope for the best to happen. Hope our college is at par with the best institutes of the world very soon.

By now our college has good reputation within TN and few other states, soon we will take it to the world. And in the industry too SASTRA has a good respect and honour. At this point of time I would also like to say about the MOUs our college has with TCS. TCS and SASTRA holds a MOU for MCA program(MCA for TCS under graduates from SASTRA). SASTRA is proud to give a doctrate to MR. Ramadurai, CEO TCS. SASTRA also holds a MOU with TCS for best final year project. Many are not aware of these MOUs so I take the privilege to mention it here.

And juniors and others who want help of any sort regarding SASTRA, please feel free to contact me.

At this point I would like to thank all my staffs(both teaching & non-teaching) who have helped me at various point of time in my college life. Thank you GURUs for everything you have done to us. We are so greatful to you all.

  4. Indubitably, this article would instigate a gigantic change in every SASTRITE. Though one might express amusement on reading it the first time, I am sure you are going to ruminate over this thought-provoking idea by “Thinking beyond the horizon”.
Even I was gnashing my teeth when I didn’t get my caution deposit. As Sriram has mentioned, not a soul would have contributed for the auditorium. Yes, I bow to all your anguish for that matter. But, be aware of what is happening around in other Colleges. I reckon, SASTRA is one of the BEST Universities which filch less Money from us. I am not telling you to contribute Money to your Alma Mater, rather lend a hand with your Knowledge and Influence.
With an overwhelming response from the SASTRITES in the Alumni Meet at U.S, I am sure, the Management would orchestrate a Grand Alumni Meet in India, preferably at Chennai or B’lore (where majority of SASTRITES dwell).
Once again, I would like to appreciate Sriram for this groovy initiative.
WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE STILL DEEMING & DREAMING ABOUT? COME-ON LETS JOIN TOGETHER & ENDORSE SASTRITES!!

  5. Good initiative Sriram. Hats off. Only after coming to the states did I realize, how far we are lagging behind. The management should take drastic measures to improve standard of education and faculty, before the alumini can swoop in and do it's part.
The very first thing the management should start doing is, GIVE MY CAUTION DEPOSIT!!

  6. Dude

You have a plan, then we will execute.
4 yrs in college was enough to understand that, We doesnt matter a shit to college.
Anyways its our responsibility as seniors to help our juniors.
We can do many things on our own, just leave that management out of this. They suck bigtime

I understand that a few of you may not have a google (or any other) account so you chose to post as anon but it would be great to see a signature at the end at the least.
    @Sriram and others:
Dude, it is a nobel initiative! Kudos! There are a million things that can be done to improve things in SASTRA, lets identify at least a single one that we can change individually and make sure we go ahead with it. As PD says, if you have a plan even getting a little organized can be good. It is our duty to help not just our Alma Mater but our juniors in any way possible. It is our duty because we have to prove all those people wrong who say that we are a bunch of worthless alumni. We are a responsible set of people and SASTRA (our friends and foes there) have contributed towards this!
As far as faculty is concerned, this is a problem across our country. The reason being that a teacher is not paid enough to attract brighter talent. Those who take up a teaching post (in most cases) do so for lack of other opportunities or other personal reasons, very few go there for the lure of 'teaching' itself. A few teachers have really insulted my inclination to study in SASTRA and quite a few have inspired me too.
SASTRA IS NOT RECOGNIZED ANYWHERE OUTSIDE TAMIL NADU. I know it is a great institution (better than so many that I have seen) but people don't know about it as there are no (very very less) advertisement done. (Even a Mac needed 1983 remember?)
FYI: I'm joining SASTRA as an adjunct faculty member from the 4th of July (did anyone say 'freedom'?). I will be handling one paper on weekends, travelling every week is a concern (as I can't throw my WIPRO's job in the trash can yet!) but my love for instructing overcame it in no time. I will try to give my best. Do give me suggestions for the same.
Thanks for the post Sriram. If nothing else, I hope this instigates a few of us towards reaching out to our Alma mater!

  9. @Sriram: Well, I am not really sure what to say here, it has been on my (and others') mind for a long time to start a website for the alumni, I believe an effort to incorporate that into the official sastra website was turned down (PJ and Amit have more details i believe). So this means we cant trust them, or should'n count on them to do this. My story with sastra is not as tragic where teacher discrimination is concerned, you can say i was one of the lucky ones, but there have been several different incidences, with me or others like you around me which are enough to paint the picture. And as they say, misery binds all and better than anything else, I believe we have created the thread that can be knitted by every alumni into a strong fabric that can help us through all the wilderness around us. I saw glimpses of it in the Chicago alumni meet, however, its a long way before we can touch it. The power of a strong network cannot be emphasized more, and that is one thing we all have being sastraiites. We dont have to be proud of the things they did or didn do, though we can be proud of what we can and will do.
Kudos Sriram, I propose opening up a wordpress account for sastra alumni's, let this not be a sole responsibility but a shared one.
@ PJ, PD, Minku: what say? and PJ joining sastra as an adjunct faculty?!!!@$!@# M not sure if i am proud yet, but it sure is gonna be a hell lotta fun to see how many days he lasts and to hear the 'inside' stories!!!

  10. Let me just put it in more details now....
I agree with you but I must also say that I am both "Happy and proud" to be a pass out of SASTRA! Yes, there are problems there, but let’s reflect on how we can contribute in making things better. As discussed with you a couple of times earlier, let me just jot down what exactly we can do and how we can go about it
1). Formulate a plan for the alumni association. What exactly we want to do? why? how?
2). Go to the college administration discusses it in detail about it.
3). Make sure we have website for the Alumni association up and running ASAP.
4). Let every Alumni know about. This can obviously be done very effectively online.
5). Crowd source it with ideas.
6). Unleash the potential of the network!

This is just a rough draft..... plz add in suggestions, ideas, comments... I have a simple point here.... someone has to take the initiative. SASTRA desperately needs an alumni association....and overwhelming response on this post is a proof enough that this is an idea whose time has come.

  13. hi..
Like sheru, I also graduated only this year. And my answer is a NO to almost all the questions u posted. But I'd like to make a few things clear about the perspective ppl share about our college.
    1. As much as 99.5% AIEEE students who come from the north are those who have chosen SASTRA after having attempted for IIT. This just goes to prove that if not as good as IIT, we are in the range of the second best college.
    2. We cannot expect SASTRA to gain name on a national level. Because it is a private instituition. Unless we are gonna do something ground-breaking to get our college famous.
    3. I also agree with the caution deposit issue. When they are going to fleece money right outta our pockets, its gonna be tough to respect the college's requirements and work for it. BUT its important to understand that our college is a lot cheaper and economic compared to other instituitions like VIT and SRM and likes.

Now, as mentioned earlier, we need to improve on the industrial exposure. Management has done a lot for the students well-being, agreed. But the same lack of involvement exists from the management side as well. Once u r out of college, u r left all by urself to face the corporate world, with hardly any backing. That needs to be changed. Also about the staff attitude. Well, what can you expect from those who come from villages like thanjavur and Trichy? lol.. Coming out of that college without a bad name is a lil difficult, when u are involved in so many extra curricular activities :).. thats my observation.. Nice post! Guess we can contribute once our company decides to call us :) ('cos thats all our Dean-TnP expects- financial backing!)

P.S: I think I know the Microprocessor staff u r talking about.. been thru the same :)

  14. This is the idea which is long due and at last someone is coming out with it. Good work Sriram but there is long way to go.First, I want to tell those people who hate SASTRA and thinks this idea is bullshit. "Love it or Hate it but you can't ignore it". You can't delete the very fact from your life that you graduated from SASTRA. This is the time when you can contribute in every single way possible to make your college a great place to study. So that 10 years down the line if anybody ask you from which college you pass out, you can proudly say SASTRA. Now cutting back to the action plan which we the alumni of SASTRA needs to frame. With due respect to the Parimal's thought of putting the management out of this, I think you can't achieve your goals without the backing of the management (I know this will be tough). First and foremost is the launch of the website so that we can easily connect to alumni and discuss what needs to be done. We need to spread this and invite as many SASTRITES as possible to work on this plan. I am in and ready to join this great beginning.

  15. Hey tis is a nce initiative. But do u really think this s gonna make an impact on our Dean?? Definitely not dude. To be frank running a University is just a Business for them. They are least bothered abt the Alumnae.I still remember the day our English Dean Ramani sir grew ferocious on the lack of basic help that our Coll could provide to our students. All these things make me feel that something has to be done, but clapping with 2 hands alone can bring about sound.Anyways ur brave initiative is much appreciable. Hope this brings in some change in our Dean and other college staffs.

  17. Hey Sriram, a very great initiative.. awesome :)

what i feel is, one of the main things that keeps sastra from achieving the status of a very good institution is the money factor.

We have the best students, better infrastructure but we lack in some aspects like quality of faculty, industry interaction etc..

    Before getting deemed university status,
sastra had management quota and so some amount of money came to the management as donation. Then after getting deemed university status in 2001 or so,the same thing continued..
From 2003 onwards sastra started to follow merit based admissions. So sastra had more meritorious students coming but was left out with getting 25-30K as fees alone and there was no room for donations etc.

And i don’t think that sethu and his gang are having any political/business backing which is the case in many other deemed univs and colleges !!!!!!!!!!!!!.

As alumni, we can share our knowledge, skills to our juniors.. we can use the power of networking to show them more opportunities.

But to bring about a change in sastra's infrastructure, showcase of its talents, capabilities requires monetary support and for this both us and the management have to work together ..........

to get knowledgeable faculty and to retain them requires sastra to pay them well, provide them with resources incase they want to do research etc...

because there are very few good souls left on earth who would be willing to proceed with teaching while getting a negligible pay....

we can directly help the juniors by setting up some sort of an alumni fund for helping and enabling them in settin up workshops, conducting competitions, clubs and arranging for guest lectures... .
so that management can concentrate in improving and sustaining the infra, faculty etc.

also now a lot of deemed universities have come up.. some years back we had only vit ,amrita as our competitors .. now even the college next to our univ has got deemed university status.. so it is really a high time we formed an alumni association and frame a plan and implement it so that our university becomes on par with NIT/IIT in all aspects.

  19. Hey Sriram,
Its really nice to read your post. However I feel sad on reading about the colorful terms used to describe the college from which we all have graduated. This means I am not the only one who feels like that about SASTRA. Its true that the management of SASTRA has hardly done anything which we can ever be proud of. However, I feel that just like a country is made by its citizens a university's glory lies in the success of its students.

My personal feeling is that SASTRA has only one aim and that is to make money. The management does not care about the future of the students. They don't care about the academic developent of the students and the faculty alike. Its sad to see them ridiculously stressing on the discipline and cultural aspects and at the same time ignoring the most important thing which is academics.

After spending four years in that university I feel sad for having lost four precious years of my life rather than feeling proud or nostalgic. Every single day I spent there was filled with fear and apprehension. I felt disgusted by the inept faculty members who begged us not to ask questions during classes. The college management's reign of terror affected both students and faculty alike.

All said and done, I would very much like to be a part of any initiative to change the way things are at SASTRA.

(And just to clear your illusions about SASTRA being a great college, all the people I have met so far have never even heard the name of SASTRA. We are going to have a tough time all our life telling people where we have done our engineering from.)
